WPC vs PVC Doors: The Real Difference
Babeco · 2026
The short answer
Both look the same in a showroom. The difference is inside the door. A WPC door is made from wood powder mixed with polymers, so it behaves like wood when it is worked, but it does not swell with water or get eaten by termites. A PVC door is plastic all the way through.
Weight: why your hinges care
A Babeco WPC leaf weighs 25–27 kg depending on width, and the full set with frame and bar weighs 43–45 kg. PVC doors of the same size usually start above 30 kg for the leaf alone. Extra weight pulls on the hinges every time the door swings, so heavier doors tend to loosen and sag over the years.
The surface film
The colour and wood grain you see is a thin film glued onto the door. PVC is smooth plastic, so the film has little to grip and can peel with time. WPC contains wood powder, so the surface can be sanded like real wood before gluing. Babeco uses PUR glue imported from Germany, and the bond is covered by our warranty.
Screws and hinges
People worry that screws will not hold in WPC. In our 4-nail hang test a door is held up by only four nails while a grown man hangs from it. Some makers add a solid wood strip inside the edges for screws; a true WPC profile does not need it.
Side by side
- Water and moisture: WPC — does not swell. PVC — does not swell.
- Termites and insects: both resist them.
- Weight: WPC leaf 25–27 kg. PVC leaf usually above 30 kg.
- Film bonding: WPC can be sanded, so the film bonds like on wood. PVC is smooth, so bonding is weaker.
- Feel: WPC feels and sounds closer to a wooden door.
Which should you buy?
For bathrooms, kitchens and any room where a wooden door would swell, both beat wood. Between the two, WPC is lighter on the hinges and holds its film better, which is why we build only WPC.
